Puppy Manners - Part 1

Our 5-week interactive puppy class focuses on helping you learn about proper socialization techniques for your puppy (especially in regards to men and strangers) and other dogs, as well as teaching basic good manners such as Polite Greeting, Sit, Down and Come, and real life skills such as Drop It and Leave It. Our goal is to set your puppy up to be a well-mannered, confident, adult dog.  Puppies are exposed to many new sights and sounds in a positive way.  Many other puppy topics are covered during class such as puppy play biting, crate training, house-training, walking nicely on a leash, learning not to guard their food or bones, learning how to be alone without being upset & learning to love to be petted and handled by everyone. Clicker training methodology will also be taught in this class but is not required.

This 5-week program is for young dogs that have completed our Puppy Manners Part I or similar course and know the basics such as sit, down, stay, and come. It is designed for puppies that are ready to work the basics in much harder situations. In this course, your puppy will learn to be calmer in exciting situations – like when you have guests in your home, go for walks or take him out in public.

Just some of what you’ll learn in Puppy Manners – Part 2:  polite greetings with people, recall off distractions (so important!), focused walking, developing more focus on YOU (even with strange dogs and people nearby), and adding non-food rewarding to your repertoire.

Fluency Series @ North Park

There are many dogs who will sit, lie down, stay, heel, and show off a few fun parlor tricks at home – but who look completely perplexed when asked to perform the same behaviors at an outdoor café, while visiting relatives or friends, or perhaps even when entering the ring at a dog show!

It’s important to understand generalization and fluency because a dog’s failure to perform is often seen as the dog’s deliberate choice to not comply. In reality, the dog’s lack of compliance usually means he doesn’t know the behavior to the extent you believe he does. That’s a training problem; the behavior wasn’t generalized and taught to fluency.

In this series of classes we will work on Precision, Latency, Speed, Distance, Duration, and Distractions.

Advanced Manners (CGC Preparation Class)

The AKC Canine Good Citizen program was developed to test a dog’s disposition as well as a dog’s skills. Preparing for the CGC is valuable for many different reasons – training helps deepen the bond between pets and their people, passing the test is a prerequisite for many therapy dog certifications and the skills mastered in class are helpful for dogs getting ready to participate in various dog sports.  This class polishes your dog’s skills to prepare your dog to take the 10 item CGC test.

Prepare for the AKC test to officially make your dog a Canine Good Citizen (CGC). This class takes your dog’s training to a higher level. Students will work through bigger distractions, increase clarity of cues and learn advanced behaviors including the skills required for the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Test.
